Record-Breaking Lotto Max Jackpot Has Been Won

A record-breaking Canadian lottery jackpot has been won in Quebec, by Italian couple Nunzio and Giuseppa Lanteri. The Lotto Max jackpot of CA$65 million was up for grabs on Tuesday night – the first Lotto Max jackpot to exceed CA$60 million, and the largest jackpot ever offered in Canada.

The Lotto Max results for Tuesday June 11th were 18, 23, 28, 32, 34, 44 and 50, with a Bonus Ball of 29. Over one million prizes were won, but only one ticket matched all seven numbers to win the Lotto Max jackpot. Giuseppa and Nunzio Lanteri are the sole claimants for the highest jackpot ever offered in Canada.

Incredibly, this is not the first time the Montreal residents have won a million-dollar prize. In 2017, they won £1 million in a Loto-Quebec draw, splitting the money with their two children. This time, though, their winnings are being split between themselves and another six members of their family.

The previous record for the highest jackpot in Canada went to a Lotto 6/49 prize worth $64 million, which was won by a single ticket in Ontario. Zhe Wang bought a ticket for the October 17th, 2015 draw from a petrol station in Mississauga, and became the sole recipient of the eight-figure sum.

Lotto Max Jackpot Changes

Tuesday night’s Lotto Max jackpot exceeded $60 million for the first time in its history, owing to substantial changes the lottery underwent in May 2019. Lotto Max’s jackpot used to be capped at CA$60 million, with any money from potential rollovers instead funding supplementary MaxMillions prizes. As of May 11th 2019, the jackpot cap was increased to CA$70 million.

The number of prize tiers also increased, with prizes now available for matching four or five main numbers and the Bonus Ball. Draws initially occurred once a week on Fridays, but a weekly Tuesday draw was introduced, giving players more chances to win a Lotto Max prize. The pool from which Lotto Max numbers are drawn was increased from 49 to 50, leading to the overall odds of winning becoming 1 in 7.

Largest Lotto Max Prize Pool

Though the CA$65 million Lotto Max prize has broken jackpot records for Canada, it does not represent the largest prize pool to have been offered in Canadian lottery history. In October 2018, a Lotto Max draw offered a CA$60 million jackpot and 55 MaxMillions prizes, bringing the total amount of money available to win to $115 million. The jackpot was won by a single ticket in Edmonton, Quebec, while 27 MaxMillions prizes were won.

The Lotto Max jackpot will return to its CA$10 million minimum ahead of the next draw. To learn more about Lotto Max, take a look at our Lotto Max overview.
