You would think that to be the youngest ever South African Lottery winner would be the biggest news ever to happen in your life but for Jason ‘Pang’ Canterbury it’s hardly a celebration. South Africa’s youngest ever lottery winner is appealing a murder conviction in the Western Cape High Court today and may never see his lottery win. We often hear in the lottery news pages about young lottery winners going bad, but this story is much worse than just blowing lottery millions.
Canterbury was conviction of murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and preventing the course of justice three years ago. It was said that he not only murdered drug runner Henry Stevens, but even helped to dispose of the man’s body. The South African Lottery millionaire denied the charges but was sentenced to 28 years behind bars.

Now the lottery winner is appealing the court’s decision, saying that while he did help to dispose of the drug runners body, he never committed murder. Having already had huge press interest with the lottery win, the South African press are having a field-day with Mr Canterbury.
Judgement has been reserved in the case and we do not know whether Mr Canterbury will be going back to prison to serve out his 28 year sentence, or whether he’ll be released or have his sentence shortened.
Let’s hope that future South African Lottery winners come with better stories, tonight’s jackpot is R6 million and lottery tickets are available now for that draw.
