When you purchase tickets for the UK National Lottery, you are probable aware that a chunk of that cash goes to good causes across the UK but other than that do you actually know where your National Lottery money goes. How it is broken up and who decides what is classed as a good cause. Well our simple guide should make it easy for you to see exactly how good causes have every reason to celebrate every time you play the UK National Lottery.
The UK National Lottery is run by Camelot and is said to be the most cost-efficient lottery in Europe. This has allowed the UK National Lottery to generate a staggering £22 billion for good causes across the UK so far, and of course that figure is rising all the time.

The amount of money that goes to good causes depends week on week on lottery sales across the UK. The more you spend on the UK National Lottery, the more money goes back into the pot to help charities and good causes across the UK.
Typically around 28% of UK National Lottery revenue goes to good causes. Another 50% is paid to winners in prizes and lottery jackpots, 12% is paid to the government in lottery duty – which again goes back into the pot to help the country, 5% goes to National Lottery retailers in commission for each draw and 6% in commission for scratch card sales. Operating costs of the lottery are around 4% of total revenue.
Lottery funds for good causes are shared out by a variety of other organisations such as The Big Lottery Fund and The Lottery Heritage Fund and Camelot is not actually responsible for the allocation or distribution of lottery funds.
During the last year, the 28% of lottery funds that goes to good causes was shared out as follows:
- Health, Education, Environment and charity – 50%
- Sports – 16.67%
- Arts – 16.67%
- Heritage – 16.67%
In real money terms that is over £22 billion to good causes since the UK National Lottery launched in 1994, you can read more about where each grant and donation goes and play in all the UK National Lottery draws by clicking the lottery link above and browsing the National Lottery website.
