The big school lottery

Usually we stick to lottery news on these pages but this week it’s all about the kids going back to school in the UK and the big school lottery that some of them face upon finding a school place. The other big story in the news of course is the UK National Lottery Awards and that led to us wondering if, like in other countries around the world, more lottery cash could be used to improve schools and public services in the UK.
The UK National Lottery pays taxes to the government of course but could some cash intended for good causes actually be used in a more productive way? Right now the UK National Lottery is part-funding the 2012 Olympic Games and hundreds of millions is being invested while thousands of children around the UK have no school to start this week.

It seems a tragic state of affairs for what is supposed to be a developed country when children cannot go to school and millions in lottery cash is being used to build an Olympic stadium.
It was hoped that a new government would bring in better ways to spend UK National Lottery cash but no noticeable difference has been seen so far. We’re not in any way criticising the amount that the UK National Lottery gives away, in fact we’re regular shouting up good causes from our world lottery pages but the two big news stories this week may change the way people look at the UK National Lottery, it’s rules with the government and the organisations who benefit from millions in good causes cash every week.
