Summer Fat one with El Gordo Lottery

We’re on the countdown now to the biggest lottery event of the summer, the Summer Fat one with the El Gordo Lottery. This Spanish Lottery only draws three times a year and the summer draw is due to take place on Saturday 3rd July. There’s €140 million in prizes up for grabs and the draw is a National Event in Spain, Lottery fever is sweeping Spain already as whole villages buy up tickets in preparation for the televised draw but the El Gordo doesn’t work like other World Lottery draws.
Although the El Gordo Spanish Lottery boasts the biggest prize pools in the world, the money is shared out in many, many smaller prizes. There’s a one in six chance of winning a prize in the Summer Fat One and more than 2,000 lottery players win at least face value of their ticket back.
Lottery tickets for the El Gordo are also much more expensive than other lottery draws from around the world and as such as split into ten decimos. Players can buy a tenth of a ticket (a decimo) but often families and whole villages club together to buy strips of tickets and share the prizes.
Because of this, the El Gordo is very much a social event in Spain with players spending the day watching the draw with their local communities who are effectively lottery syndicates.
