Price Increase on South African Lottery

Players are angered after an announcement of a proposed price increase on South African Lottery tickets. Gidani – the force behind the South Africa Lottery – have just announced that from Match 28th 2009 lotto tickets prices will rise by R1 for the main lotto and 50c for the Lotto Plus. It’s a big hike and players right across South Africa are said to be disappointed at the decision.
A spokesman for Gidana justified the increase by saying that it would – in the long term – benefit South African Lottery players with bigger prizes, especially during these tough economic times, they also added that this is the first price increase single the lottery launched nine years ago and it will increase prize money on the draw.

Of course lottery players feel that the tough economic times are exactly the reason why the price should not be increased as many struggle to find the cash in the first place to be in with a chance of a winning a life changing amount of money.
A consumer union is quoted as saying the price increase is bewildering as the lottery certainly isn’t running at a loss and prize money is already adequate.
Currently, tickets for the South African Lottery will set you back R2.50, after the increase each ticket will cost R3.50 and it seems such a big hike in the price may just be too much for South African Lottery players to pay.
The price increases for the lottery come into play on March 28th 2009 and I guess only time will tell if this move actually increases jackpots or decreases them as players stop buying lottery tickets.
