Now I don’t know about you but I’m of the thinking that it’s a little bit greedy to be lucky enough to win the lottery and then continue to claim benefits. However that’s exactly what mother of three, Donna Newby did. This action has seen the lottery winner convicted of benefit fraud and earned her a suspended jail sentence.
Ms Newby purchased her home in August 2004 for £137,000 from the proceeds of a National Lottery win, however the lady failed to notify the department of work and pensions and continued to receive a combination of housing benefit, council tax benefit and income support-over £20,000 in total- while she was living in the property with her partner.
She escaped a jail sentence as she has been making an effort to repay the amount defrauded but has received a suspended sentence plus community service. The judge would normally have imposed a custodial sentence but for her efforts to repay the money.
As this lottery winner is convicted of benefit fraud it makes you wonder just why we pay our taxes for the greedy of this country to take more than they need. A National Lottery win should be taken is a fortunate event that means we do not have to struggle any more, especially when the recipient was on benefits beforehand. It seems there is no end to the greed of some people.
