Knowing you had won a big lotto jackpot, how long could you wait before claiming your prize? It’s a question worth pondering as a big Lottery win from November is claimed. The winner, Lynn Hagerbrant of Greenwich, Connecticut won $8.8 million in the Connecticut Lottery on November 23rd 2007 but didn’t claim the jackpot until this week.
Upon claiming the Lottery win from November, the lady said she had waited to claim the jackpot so she could decide what to do with the money long term.
Ms Hagerbrant bought the quick pick ticket at a local gas station and after choosing the the lump sum option will receive $3.8 million after taxes have been paid.
Lottery winners have 1 year to claim their lottery prize before it goes back into the lottery fund. Twenty five tickets have been unclaimed in the Connecticut lottery since its launch.
This story has fascinated many people as I’m sure it will you too. How can anyone sit on that amount of money for such a huge length of time? The interest alone Lynn Hagerbrant has missed out on comes to a phenomenal amount.
Personally if I won our own National Lottery I’d be straight on the phone to the lottery claim line arranging when I could collect my big prize, then I’d take a long holiday to help me come up with a long term plan. I certainly couldn’t sit on that amount of money for 10 months.
How long would you take to claim a prize this big? Could you sit and wait while you decided what to do with the cash? I think I’d leave it in my own bank account while I was making that decision.
