With the advent and popular rise of internet gambling and the ability to play many online games, including the lottery at the click of a mouse the National Lottery is funding a study into underage gambling. The Lottery study into underage gambling will provide a better context of overall gambling in the teenage age group and provide comparison with a previous study undertaken in 2006 on the same subject of underage gambling.
The study will be run by the UK’s National Lottery commission with input from Salford University, 9,000 12-15 year olds will take part and it will be used to measure levels of underage lottery play.

In accordance with the Lottery regulations, sales of National Lottery products, tickets and scratch cards are illegal to persons under 16 years of age. It is hoped the study will ensure that it is as difficult as possible for young people to access National Lottery products and measure how things have changed since the last study in 2006.
The study, by the National Lottery will also measure if there have been any changes in the type of gambling young people are partaking in, especially with the rise of the popularity of the internet and other media.
In the 2006 study it was found that overall participation by young people in gambling activities had actually fallen and rather than buying lottery tickets young people were actually being drawn into other types of gambling such as fruit machines, with a staggering 54% of young people having played them. Just 7% of underage people had actually played the National Lottery or Lottery games and it is hoped that level will have fallen even further with the new study.
The results for the study will be published late in the summer and it should prove an interesting insight to the gambling habits of young people.
