Lottery Grant for Shoe Tree

Money It’s a mystery that has baffled locals for years, an Ash tree full of shoes on the A40 near High Wycombe. No one knows why there are so many pairs of shoes hanging from the old Ash tree and even a lottery grant for the shoe tree has been unable to fathom the reasoning. For almost forty years there has been shoes hanging from the Ash tree but even after a £265,000 lottery grant the story remains a mystery.

Some believe it’s a fertility ritual, while others just think it’s a prank that has got out of hand but what is for sure, is that no one has admitted to tying almost one hundred pairs of shoes, boots and various types of footwear to the tree, so the mystery has remained unsolved.

As the stories surrounding the tree became local folklore, the special trees and woods project running in the Chiltern area added it to a list of five hundred special trees in the area. In September 2005 the special trees project was given £265,000 in a grant from the Heritage Lottery fund from the National Lottery but still the tree remains an absolute mystery.

I think this can safely go down as one of the most bizarre lottery related stories ever written, especially when we all know that every tree grows a couple of feet every year! Ok bad joke but it made me smile.

The Heritage Lottery fund allocates funds for good causes from the UK National Lottery across the UK upon application, millions are handed out every year to country-wide projects and this is just one of the donations given by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
