Lottery Funding for Maritime Museum

maritime museumThe National Maritime Museum’s project to develop a major new section to their museum has been given a boost today with the promise of £5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The lottery funding for the Maritime Museum added to the substantial £20 million given to the museum from philanthropist Sammy Ofer means the project is on track to open in 2012 which is the Museum’s 75th anniversary and the year London sees the Olympics coming to the city.

The project will see a brand new wing for the Maritime Museum including a state of the art library with special archive facilities, a gallery for special exhibitions and enhanced visitors facilities. The new wing will have a major south entrance built in, opening up the museum from the Royal Observatory and King William Walk, it will tie the museum in much better with other facilities in the area and the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage site.

This Lottery funding for the Maritime Museum completes the project cost of £35 million making this the largest project in the history of the National Maritime Museum. It will see the museum create an extra 7,000 square metres of floor space plus over 500 square metres of outdoor space for the use of its patrons.

This is just one of the ways the UK National Lottery helps good causes and improves the countries National treasures with funding from the Heritage Lottery fund, it’s nice to know that when we buy our lottery tickets it’s not just our own good causes we are helping.
