Lottery Cash for Newts

UK National Lottery The Heritage Lottery Fund has provided funding of £49,000 to a wildlife charity based in Hampshire called Froglife whose aim is to raise interest and awareness of amphibious creatures and wildlife in the local area.

The stars of the show are a protected species of yellow and black great crested newts that are a protected species as a few of the events planned using the HLF funding will take place in and around the Hampton Nature Reserve in Cygnet Park where the largest colony of the great crested newt can be found.

The HLF funding means the communities, local youth groups and schools will be able to visit the site and learn all about the newts and other wildlife.

Hampton Nature Reserve was previously a brickpit and makes a great home for a wide variety of wildlife with its hills and ponds.

Sam Goodlet of Froglife said “Here in Peterborough we are lucky enough to be the place where these lovely black and yellow crested dragons have chosen to call home. We are so happy to be able to show more people around and bolster local pride.”

She went on to say “The Heritage Lottery Fund contribution means that local residents are going to be able to learn a lot more about the Hampton Nature resolve with opportunities to become involved in exciting walks and talks that we’re running.”
