Children from the St Barnabas School in York are celebrating today after being awarded £4,000 of National Lottery cash for the Gardening kids by the Big Lottery Fund for good causes. The Cash will mean that they can transform the school’s allotment to become a ‘breathing space’- a nature-full, pleasant environment for the children and the local community to come and enjoy.
The school in York has long been introducing some innovative nature schemes for the children to learn about the outside world, nature and animals, having this year introduced chickens to the school. Dolly, Sally and Harley as named by the school are three brown pullet hens happily living at the school and helping the children learn how to care for the animals.
The £4,000 of Lottery cash for these gardening kids will be used to transform the childrens allotment area at the school in York into a green place, it is hoped that by raising the flower beds the area will become ideal for the children to work in effectively creating an outdoor classroom at the school.
The idea is if the children have space to work outside and learn about nature the world around them, it teaches children about sustainable produce and teaches them to be respectful of outdoor areas.
It’s just another example of how your National Lottery cash goes to help so many good causes around the country, a relatively small amount of £4,000 will make so much difference at this school and teach the children about something they may have never had contact with otherwise.
