Cumbrian Gran wins Lotto jackpot

UK National Lottery Cumbria has been through a lot this past week with some of the worst floods in recorded history, during which PC Bill Barker lost his life when a bridge collapsed.  With such bad fortune for an area it was welcoming to discover that during all of the madness and despair there was some good lottery fortune as a Cumbrian Gran won the Lotto jackpot on Wednesday night.

Amidst the downpours there was a ray of sunshine in Cumbria. Brenda Pugh, 70, from was one of the eight lucky ticket holders to share Wednesday night’s £6,804,104 National Lottery jackpot, winning a little over £850,000 each. The lottery windfall came for Brenda on a poignant day as it was exactly nine years to the day that her late husband, Bill suffered a stroke. Also, in another twist for those of you who are superstitions, Brenda had worn a necklace, which was given to her by Bill on their wedding day in 1960, for the first time in years prior to buying her winning lottery ticket.

On recalling the moment that Brenda became one of Britain’s newest lottery winners, Brenda told of her excitement at get three numbers, then four, then five. She thought to herself “How much do you get for five?” Then as the sixth lottery number was drawn she danced around the living room with joy. The first thing Brenda did was rush to the phone and call her daughter, Nicola and share the exciting lottery news. Lottery winner Brenda says that she intends to redecorate her house, have a new kitchen fitted, make that sure “the family is ok” and have the best Christmas ever. And who can blame her?
