Compensation for Lottery Rape Victim

Lottery Ball A woman who launched a legal battle to claim compensation from a serial rapist who then went on to win £7 million on the UK National Lottery has received an out of court settlement. The amount of compensation for Lottery Rape victim has not been released but it will surely be more than the paltry £5,000 she received from the Criminal Injuries Board after the attack.

The victim, who maintains her anonymity and is known only as Mrs A was told after the attack that suing for compensation would be pointless as the rapist Iorworth Hoare had a lack of funds. However when he won the UK National Lottery it was more six years since the attack, past the amount of time in which a claim can be made.

In a landmark ruling Mrs A had this overturned allowing her to launch this battle to receive compensation from Mr Hoare.

Mr Hoare was jailed for life in 1989 for the rape but won £7 million on a National Lottery ticket he purchased while on day release in 2004. It meant that when he was released he could purchase a £700,000 mansion in Northumberland while Mrs A says her whole life has been overshadowed by the attack.

The settlement is the first of its kind in the UK and could pave the way for other actions by victims of sex abuse to make claims against their attackers, even if many years have passed since the attack.

It just goes to show that lottery wins do not discriminate and certainly don’t only go to people deserving of them. Life truly is a lottery.
