Canadian Jackpot Winner Lands In Jail

A lottery win should be followed by lots of celebrations but this wasn’t the case as one Canadian jackpot winner lands in jail. The player scooped a massive $4 million on the Canada Lotto 6/49 but instead of celebrating he was immediately handcuffed and thrown in the cells.
The winner has been named as Barry Shell, 45 of Brampton on the outskirts of Toronto and immediately after he had pocketed his winning Canada Lotto 6/49 cheque he was promptly handcuffed. Winning the lottery is not a crime of course but this gentleman had an arrest warrant pending since 2003 for failing to appear in court on charges of theft.
Police recognised him as he was posing for photographs collecting his $4.3 million lottery check and swung into action, arresting him at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming headquarters. They told him of his pending arrest warrant, then he was handcuffed and put behind bars.
The OLG website warns players to play the Canada Lotto 6/49 responsibly and I guess that covers ensuring you are not wanted for any crime before signing your ticket.
Mr Shell has now been produced in court on the charges of theft amounting to $5,000 and we’re guessing it will be quite a while before he is throwing any wild parties to celebrate his lottery win.
Winning the lottery should be the making of someone, but this wasn’t the case for Mr Shell who many now be regretting ever buying a lottery ticket at all.
