Canada Lotto 649 Faces Lawsuit

A Canadian gentleman has launched a legal case against the British Columbia Lottery Corp. The company behind Canada Lotto 649 faces the lawsuit in regard to the validity of scratch card type lottery tickets. The case, filed this week in British Columbia supreme court centres around the issue of selling scratch card tickets after the top prize has been won.
We see scratch cards on sale all the time at Lottery retailers offering staggering top prizes and who is to know if this top prize has already been won when the ticket is purchased. This case will argue that the British Columbia Lottery Corp can legally sell tickets after the top prize stated on the tickets have already been won.

Albert Chartrand will argue that he has purchased thousands of scratch cards over the last thirteen years and although the Lottery corporation know when the top prizes have been won, they continue to sell the tickets. By doing this he says that the BCLC has obtained millions of dollars on the sale of scratch cards by falsely promising the chance to win the top prize. Mr Chartrand argues that the BCLC is in breach of its obligations.
Chartrand is seeking a refund of the money he spent on tickets that had no chance of winning and is seeking to have the case certified as a class-action law suit.
The BCLC, the company behind Canada Lotto 6/49 has yet to comment on the case and a statement of defence is yet to be filed.
One can only wonder if cases like this will be brought about in UK courts regarding the sale of scratch cards from the UK, of course if the case is successful it may see the withdrawal of all scratch cards once the top prize has been hit, something that may be a logistical nightmare for world lottery organisations.
