Athletes get Lottery Millions

Money Pot When we watch our team out in Beijing it’s worth noting that many of them are helped into the position they are in due to National Lottery funding. All of team GB, plus young sportsmen and women are supported by UK sport, the team who distribute lottery funding across the sports ensure our athletes get lottery millions to improve training conditions etc.

Over £26.5 million is given to athletics, with our swimming team receiving around £22 million and around the same to the rowing team to help build sports centres for them to train, improve conditions and hopefully ensure we come home with plenty of Gold trophies in this years Olympic games.

Britain’s cyclists have already scooped a gold trophy with the help of Nicole Cooke and Rebecca Adlington has also secured Team GB a gold in swimming events, our rowing team have just rowed their way to another Gold for team GB making it an exciting time for team GB but it poses an interesting question. Do athletes need Lottery millions to secure Gold’s or would our team do just as well without funding?

Personally I think it’s great to see the Lottery support this worthy cause and more sports centres and training grounds has to be better for all of us, including the young up and coming sportsmen and women who will be our future Olympic champions, especially with London 2012 looming now. The last thing Team GB needs is to be embarrassed in their homeland. National Lottery funding ensures they always have somewhere to train, it pays for the best coaches and hopefully will put us back on the athletics map and will ensure we bring home lots of gold trophies from this Olympics and future Olympic games.

So next time you buy a National Lottery ticket it's worth remembering that it's not only your own chances your improving, you're helping a great deal of good causes supported by the National Lottery.
