Proceeds from the Irish Lottery are paid into the National Lottery fun (Ireland), from which funds are distributed to private and public good caused with €245 million raised for good causes in 2007 alone.

Since its launch in 1987 the Irish Lottery has grown and grown, originally only offering scratch cards, its games now include Lotto drawings, television bingo, and a televised game show ‘Millionaire Raffle’ plus participation in the multi-national Euromillions lottery.

Unlike many world lotteries, all prizes for the Irish Lottery are paid as lump sums with no tax to pay on winnings. Prizes must be claimed within 90 days of the draw date, if unclaimed the prize goes back into the Irish Lotteries good causes fund.

How to play the Irish Lottery

Prizes vary from week to week dependent on the amount of people playing, but there is a guaranteed €2 million jackpot every single draw. Regular jackpot rollovers have seen the Irish Lottery jackpot up into the €10’s of millions in the past. The record Irish Lottery jackpot was €18,963,441 and was won on June 28th 2008 by a syndicate of 16 workers at a quarry plant in Co Carlow.

To play you need to choose six numbers from a possible 45 available, winning the jackpot requires matching all six numbers to the main numbers drawn. You can choose your own numbers or purchase a quick picks ticket, which works in the same way as the National Lottery lucky dip option.

There are smaller prizes available for the draw for matching five numbers plus the bonus, five numbers without the bonus, four numbers with or without the bonus or three numbers with or without the bonus. The prize amounts drop according depending on how many numbers you match and as mentioned all tickets must be cashed in within 90 days.

There are draws every Wednesday and Saturday evening, with special draws held for Christmas and other special days throughout the year.
